Numerous medals were one by many of the cadets at the squadron; the haul included two gold, six silver and three bronze medals. The squadron’s junior girls and intermediate boy’s teams were placed 2nd and 3rd overall which was an excellent result for the squadron. OC Flt Lt Sage said “We brought a very determined team – everyone gave 100 per cent and it showed, with strong finishes and medals in both track and field events across the age groups. Cadet Cpl Weaver, 16, achieved gold in both the 800m and 1500m track events. He then later went on to win the region 800m, we are all very proud of his achievements within the Wing and Region.
Summer Camps 2015
Recently, four cadets from the squadron went on Summer Camps to three RAF stations – RAF Brize Norton, RAF Cosford and RAF Halton. Summer camps are a great opportunity for cadets to receive a great insight into the “RAF life”. Cdt Sgt Strudwick said “Going to RAF Brize Norton really opened my eyes to what the RAF life was really like. Plus, I got to go into a C-17 Globemaster which was an amazing experience, on top of going to RAF Benson to have an Air Experience flight in a Grob Tutor!” Cdt Harrington was another cadet who attended a summer camp at RAF Cosford; she said “The camp was amazing. I made loads of new lasting friendships with cadets from all across the Sussex County! I was able to challenge myself, and I achieved things I didn’t think I could.” The experience the cadets gained from the summer camps they attended is invaluable, and is a once in a lifetime opportunity, one which will never be forgotten!

The cadets also raised over £160 for the Squadron via donation buckets upon exit from the event. Civilian Instructor Andy Murphy, Adjutant at 1440 Squadron, said “What a fantastic event and our services were much appreciated by Ricardo who have asked for us to attend again next year. It’s great to have also strengthened our connection to the local community.”
